Opuntia compressa

This plant was purchased and planted out in spring of 1995.

Winter Protection

This plant has received no protection since 1995 and has shown no signs of wet/frost damage. The plant has shown great hardiness in the UK climate. It has survived repeated temperatures of -9˚ Celsius (while wet). The plant shrivels and lies close to the ground from september until april. The plant almost looks dead during the winter months but quickly springs to life when spring arrives. Its pads fill back out in early spring and new pads   appear   in mid may.

Flowers

This plant has flowered for the past three years (June). Last year it bore over 15 large yellow flowers followed by red fruit.

UPDATE JUNE 2006

This plant hase proved very hardy but unfurtunatly last season proved to be rather tasty   to my ever increasing slug and snail population. All buds both flowers and new pads were eaten and also some of the mature pads suffered damage. The plant remains to look very sorry for its self but has shown good signs of recovering and with the application of a few slug pellets I hope pull through to make a complete recovery this season. The plant is showing numerous flower buds and new pads which lack any pads or glochids. It has tolerated repeated temperatures as low as -12º Celcius over winter of 2005/06 with no signs of damage from either the wet or the frost.
